SHOPPING Beijing is a great place to shop for gifts and souvenirs. The city is alive with department stores, antique stores and arts and crafts shops. Some of the best places to shop are at the state-run Friendship Stores where you can find a variety of items from foods to herbal medicine. In Beijing, the Friendship Store is located on Chang An Jie. If you prefer to buy from non-state-controlled establishments, you can visit one of the "free markets" located all over the city. Also, many of the hotels provide shopping areas that may have products of interest.
SPORTS Most of the deluxe hotels> offer a variety of sports facilities. These facilities include swimming pools, fitness rooms, bowling lanes and tennis and squash courts. Outside the hotels there are many choices for exercise and competition. Tennis courts, squash courts and a gymnasium are located at Kangle Palace in the Asian Games Village.
Golf lovers should contact the Beijing International Golf Club, located near the Ming Tombs. A great way to exercise and get a good look at the city is to rent a bicycle from one of the bike shops or hotels in Beijing. The cost of renting a bike for the day is only about Y3. SPORTS Sports and recreation facilities are available at the major hotels. The Hilton, among others, offers a swimming pool, fitness rooms, tennis and squash courts and aerobics classes for guests and non-guests (for a price). The Shanghai Golf and Country Club offers an 18-hole golf course designed by pro golfer Robert Trent-Jones Jr. There are some good parks in Shanghai that are ideal for jogging or walking, and those interested in local routes can get a map from the Sheraton Hua Ting.
